Suspect arrested for allegedly setting three fires in Colorado Springs overnight

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) has arrested a man for allegedly trying to set three different buildings on fire overnight on Friday, Sept. 12.

On Friday, just before 3 a.m., a woman saw a fire at a church in the 4200 block of North Academy Boulevard, just north of Woodmen Road. As she was calling 911, she found two CSPD officers nearby and reported the fire directly to them.

CSPD quickly found and extinguished the fire, only to be alerted to a second fire at a nearby gas station, located just west of the initial fire at the church. Then, a third fire was found at a nearby fast-food restaurant.

All fires were contained and extinguished with the combined efforts of CSPD, the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD), and American Medical Response (AMR).

According to CSPD, officers found a man, now identified as 32-year-old Eric Therrien, whom they believed to be a possible suspect in the area of the three fires and detained him after a short foot chase.

Evidence on the scene and items found in the suspect’s possession provided probable cause for the police to arrest Therrien for intentionally starting the three fires in what CSPD believes “…to be an attempt to ignite the adjoining buildings.”

CSPD reports that there is no evidence to believe any specific businesses were specifically targeted by Therrien. He has since been booked into the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center on multiple counts of Fourth-Degree Arson.
