Suspect causes 20K in damages after crashing into car wash

(PUEBLO, Colo.) —The Pueblo Police Department (PPD) arrested a man after he crashed a car into a store, attempted to escape, and caused thousands in damage.

At around 6 a.m. on Tuesday, July 22, officers were dispatched to a business in the 4000 block of West Northern Avenue, near Pueblo Boulevard, on a report of a crash. The reporting party stated that a red car had crashed into a kiosk at the store, and as officers were en route, they were informed that the driver was attempting to steal the kiosk.

Upon arrival, officers observed the driver, 24-year-old David Alam, attempting to load the change machine for the carwash into the trunk of the vehicle. When Alam noticed the officer approaching, he dropped the machine and attempted to escape by driving through a field east of the store towards Northern Avenue.

The suspect failed to gauge the depth of the drainage ditch and ended up getting his car stuck, according to PPD. Then, he attempted to run away.

Alam surrendered after being warned of an impending taser deployment and was arrested. He has been booked into the Pueblo County Detention Center (PCDC) for multiple charges, including Criminal Mischief, Burglary, Careless Driving, Displaying Fictitious Plates, and Failure to Appear.

Officers learned that the suspect caused over $20,000 in damage to the car wash and the change machine.

Alam is being held at the PCDC on both a no-bond and a $3 personal recognizance bond.
