Suspect hospitalized after Alamosa deputies return fire

(ALAMOSA, Colo.) — The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is looking into an altercation involving an exchange of gunfire between deputies from the Alamosa Sheriff’s Department and a suspect attempting to elude them.

In the early hours of Wednesday, June 19 deputies attempted to contact a red Ford Explorer which was driving carelessly in a Safeway Parking lot. The driver attempted to escape the deputies, driving over a grassy median and into a residential area.

At that point, the driver, later identified as 29-year-old Justin Claude Trujillo, got out of his vehicle and ran away. On the 1200 block of 3rd St, a deputy spoke to the suspect, who proceeded to pull out a handgun and fired at least one shot. In response, three deputies returned fire, and the suspect was hit twice—once in the leg, and once in the abdomen.

The deputies then helped the suspect, providing medical attention, and he was taken into custody. Trujillo was taken to a local hospital and then transferred to a hospital in Colorado Springs, where he is currently in stable condition. The three deputies were unharmed, and have been placed on Administrative Leave during the investigation.

Trujillo is facing several charges, including Criminal Attempt, murder in the first degree of a peace officer (F2), Assault in the first degree (F3), Vehicular Eluding (F5), Menacing (F5), and Possession of a Weapon by Previous Offender (F5).
