(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) said on Tuesday, July 15, two people were arrested after police stopped a stolen car near the Colorado Springs Airport.
According to CSPD, on Tuesday at around 7:45 p.m., officers with the Motor Vehicle Theft Unit found a stolen Honda Civic near Airport Road and South Academy Boulevard. Detectives started to surveil the alleged stolen car and identified a teen boy and an adult, identified as 18-year-old Joseph Martinez.
Detectives attempted a traffic stop; however, the driver eluded detectives, and law enforcement decided not to chase the car. A short time later that evening, detectives used a grapple device near the intersection of South Murray and East Fountain Boulevards and successfully stopped the car.
Police said the suspects got out of the car and ran from law enforcement, but were quickly captured. Detectives reported recovering a stolen handgun on the passenger floorboard and also found controlled substances in possession of the driver.
The teen driver is facing charges of motor vehicle theft, felony eluding, obstruction, and violation of a protection order. Martinez is facing charges of obstruction, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and violation of a protection order.
