Teen boxer raising money to attend California tournament

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A 15-year-old boxer in Colorado Springs is hoping to raise enough money so she can go to the Regional Silver Gloves tournament in California next year.

Brianna Jenks, who also plays basketball and softball, started boxing when she was just four years old and gained a passion for the sport from her grandmother, who was a boxer in Hawaii.

Brianna currently trains at R&M Boxing in Colorado Springs, and while she already qualified for the regional tournament in January, she and her family still need to raise $8,000 for the trip.

“It’s important because it’s regionals, and if I win, I get to go to the next level, which would be nationals in Missouri,” said Brianna.

Brianna’s mom, Brandy Jenks, said California also offers another opportunity for her daughter.

“It’s very important because in Colorado there’s not a lot of females for her to challenge,” explained Brandy. “So we’re hoping that in California, there’s still girls out there for her to challenge, to become a regional champion.”

Described as hardworking, dedicated, and humble, Brianna’s mom also had this to say about her daughter: “She’s not a bragger and we are very proud of her,” she said.

No matter the outcome, Brianna’s family will always be there to support her. “We get excited when she does have matches against other females,” said Brandy. “It’s always a big event for us, and we are there to cheer her on whatever the outcome is, a win or a loss.”

In hopes of raising enough money to send her daughter to regionals, Brandy said she and Brianna are doing a baking fundraiser.

“We are doing custard pies, which is a recipe from Hawaii, and we do Butter Mochi… really delicious,” she explained. “Orders are due Thursday and we meet up on Saturday and Sunday to deliver them at the meeting spot,” said Brandy.
