Teen in deadly I-70 road rage shooting sentenced to prison

DENVER (KDVR) — A teenager who was 17 when he shot and killed a man in an Interstate 70 road rage incident was sentenced Tuesday to more than two decades in prison.

Jameel James, now 18, had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of Kevin Piaskowski, 31, according to the Denver District Attorney’s Office. Judge Adam Espinosa sentenced James to 22 years in prison.

The shooting happened at I-70 and North Quebec Street on the night of Sunday, July 31, 2022.

A witness said a pickup truck was tailgating the victim’s vehicle, according to an affidavit. The witness said the truck switched lanes and began shooting after the victim brake-checked him. Police have said the pickup truck was stolen.

Kevin Piaskowski was shot and killed while driving on Interstate 70 on July 31, 2022.

After the shooting, James kept driving, crashed into two vehicles and then took off, investigators have said. He would evade arrest for nearly two weeks before he was taken into custody and charged as an adult.

Piaskowski’s fiancée told FOX31 after the shooting that the two had just gotten engaged a couple of months earlier. He worked for United Airlines, moving planes at Denver International Airport.
