The Kissing Camels and their rocky relationship

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Valentine’s Day brings out the love in all sorts of shapes and sizes—and rock formations. One of the most famous attractions in Colorado Springs has a love story that has transcended lifetimes.

The Kissing Camels have been part of Garden of the Gods since the land was first gifted to the city back in 1909. Charles Perkins, a railroad magnate, helped gift the land to the city with General Palmer, the founder of the City of Colorado Springs. Palmer and Perkins saw the value of the land and sought to preserve it while keeping the park open to the public.

The rock formations, including the camels, are composed of a combination of limestone, conglomerate, shale, and fountain formations which are up to 300 million years old. Some urban legends claim that one of the humps on the Kissing Camels was struck by lightning at some point—but park staff say that’s just not true.

Garden of the Gods will also be hosting its 19th annual Bighorn Sheep Day from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. this Saturday. A wildlife viewing station will be set up to look for bighorn sheep and many other activities will be available. The event is free for the whole family, so be sure to click here for more information.

Happy Valentine’s Day from the FOX21 team!
