Three fatalities in U.S. Highway 6 crash

PALISADE, Colo. (KREX) — On Wednesday morning, Sept. 4 just before 10:45 a.m., the Colorado State Patrol responded to a reported crash that left three dead on U.S. Highway 6, westbound near milepost 40 in Mesa County.

Officials say initial investigations show the crash involved a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The driver of the Jeep apparently hit two Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) employees, who were working outside of their vehicle before it hit a parked CDOT vehicle, causing the Jeep to roll.

One occupant from the vehicle involved at the scene was transported to a nearby hospital and the other was pronounced dead at the scene. Both CDOT workers also died on the scene.

All lanes on U.S. Highway 6 are closed from 34 Road to 35 Road. Officials say this will be an extended closure with no set time for reopening.

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office will be responsible for releasing the identities of the deceased. Colorado State Patrol’s Vehicular Crimes Unit is investigating the cause of the crash.
