(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Three popular Colorado Springs businesses announced their closures on Dec. 9 and 10, marking the latest in a tough year for small businesses in Southern Colorado.

Downtown business closures, openings this year

Mountain Shadows Restaurant

The west side’s Mountain Shadows Restaurant, which has been featured on Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives,” announced its closure, effective immediately, on Dec. 9 on Facebook. The restaurant cited difficulties resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic as a contributing factor in the closure.

“I want to thank you all for your support. It meant the world to me, and I truly appreciate it,” said owner Kasie Swain. “I’m gonna miss you guys tons; most of you know me better than I know myself!”

Swain mentioned in her Facebook post that she hopes someone who loves the restaurant buys it, so it can continue serving the west side community and beyond.

Mark Anthony’s Pretzels

Mark Anthony’s Pretzels, which has been serving the Colorado Springs community for 13 years, also announced its closure on Dec. 9. The pretzel shop on Dublin Boulevard has been providing its pretzels to the community as well as local eateries like Phantom Canyon and the Ivywild School, and said it does mostly wholesale business to other restaurants around town. However, wholesale business has been down due to so many other restaurants struggling, Mark Anthony’s said.

“The last 13 years have been so great,” wrote owner Mark Anthony in a Facebook post. “Everyone has done so much for me and my family when we lost everything in a fire you guys helped so much. Years before our oven broke and you guys bought gift cards so we could get new ones.”

Mark Anthony’s thanked the community for its years of support, and said it looks forward to upcoming opportunities in the coming months. The last day of operation at Mark Anthony’s Pretzels is Dec. 20.

FH Beerworks

FH Beerworks has been pouring brews for the east side for 10 years along with its cocktail partner NEAT Whiskey House. The two announced their closure on Dec. 10, citing the state of the industry and family wellbeing.

“This decision was not made lightly,” FH Beerworks said in its announcement on Facebook. “We are profoundly grateful for the unwavering support, friendship, and memories you have shared with us over the years. To anyone who has ever been part of this chapter of our story, we cannot even begin to thank you enough. You have made this journey truly unforgettable.”

FH Beerworks encouraged fans of the brewery to continue supporting the owners’ other small businesses, which you can learn more about by messaging FH Beerworks’ Facebook page.

The last day of operation at FH Beerworks is Dec. 21. The brewery’s beer can be found on liquor store shelves until it’s sold out.
