DENVER (KDVR) — A tow truck driver has been arrested after an investigation led deputies to the discovery of multiple stolen vehicles and child porn.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said in a release Friday that Brian Chacon, 33, a tow truck driver with Eagle Wing Towing, “may have been taking vehicles he had no legal right to impound or possess.”
The investigation began in December 2023 when a detective with the sheriff’s office’s Auto Theft Unit was working on a stolen vehicle case and learned that it may have been one of several incidents involving Eagle Wing Towing, according to the release.
“There was only one impound yard where Chacon and Eagle Wing Towing were permitted to store impound vehicles. Vehicles that were later reported stolen had been in Chacon’s possession and were never taken to this impound lot,” the sheriff’s office said.
The sheriff’s office said Chacon had taken “numerous vehicles” to U-Pull and Pay lots in Denver, Aurora and Littleton.
Court records show a public defender has been assigned to Chacon’s case. The office does not give comment on its cases.
$350K bond set in auto theft case
Investigators said that of the 81 cars that are known to have been sold to a salvage yard by Chacon or the towing company, or associated with Chacon or the towing company, 48 were confirmed as stolen, four were confirmed to be owned by the towing company and 29 could not be confirmed either way because of the inability to find the most recent or true owner, the release states.
“During the investigation, detectives also discovered that Chacon was in possession of child pornography,” the sheriff’s office said.
On Aug. 9, a warrant was issued and Chacon was arrested on Aug. 11. He was booked in the Douglas County jail where he remains on a $350,000 bond.
The sheriff’s office is recommending the district attorney’s office file the following charges:
5 counts of sexual exploitation of a child/possession of child pornography
48 counts of motor vehicle theft in the second-degree
37 counts of forgery
37 counts of chop shop activity
1 count of driving under restraint
Court records show a preliminary hearing is set in his case on Sept. 6.
