Two dogs battle heartbreaking odds to find love again

(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) shared the story of two strays with heartbreaking journeys and the happy endings both finally found.

HSPPR said it sees thousands of dogs come through the shelter every year, and each one matters, but every once in a while, a dog or two comes along and leaves a deeper impression on the team.

That was the case with Reggie and Willow–their story begins on one of the coldest days of the year. Reggie arrived first, followed by Willow a few hours later. Neither dog knew the other, but their stories were similar. They were skeletal, their ribs pressed against their skin and their eyes hollow with exhaustion, according to HSPPR. There was no fat, no muscle, no reserves, just the will to live.

HSPPR said the two dogs survival almost felt like a small miracle. The veterinary team jumped into action, working tirelessly to stabilize Reggie and Willow; their survival was not guaranteed, not even close, but these dogs were fighters.

Slowly, the dogs started their refeeding journey, one careful meal at a time. When they were strong enough, the dogs were placed into foster homes, but fostering dogs like Reggie and Willow would not be easy. It is not just food and walks, it is comforting them through fear, it is teaching them love does not have conditions, it is celebrating tiny, extraordinary milestones; the first tail wag, the first play session, the first time they curl up beside someone and feel safe.

HSPPR said their fosters gave them all of that and more. Little by little, the two dogs began to change–not just their bodies but their spirits. They started to play, to chase toys, they wrestled with their foster siblings, they sought out affection, they remembered what it meant to be dogs, to be joyful, silly, and loved.

In just a month and a half, both dogs gained over six pounds.

When the time came for them to be adopted, they were ready, according to HSPPR. Both dogs were strong, playful, and unstoppable, and were finally seen for who they truly were. Each found a home where HSPPR said they are treasured, where hunger is a memory, and winter’s chill will never touch them again. The shelter got updates from both Reggie and Willow’s families, showing them curled up with siblings and loved ones.

HSPPR said Reggie and Willow’s story is more than a happy tail, it is a reminder of what the community can do when it comes together.

“Because it wasn’t just our medical team or our fosters. It was all of us. It was you. You were there. You donated. You shared their story. You cheered them on. You believed in them, even when it hurt to look, even when it felt impossible,” wrote HSPPR.
