(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) shared that two law enforcement vehicles were hit on Thursday, Feb. 20 while law enforcement was attending other traffic events.
CSPD said on Thursday at around 1:15 a.m. an officer was working a crash scene on the southbound off-ramp from I-25 to South Circle Drive/Lake Avenue. The officer was using a fully marked vehicle with emergency lights activated. The officer was in his vehicle blocking a lane of traffic while a tow operator collected a car from the scene.
The officer’s vehicle was hit in the rear resulting in minor damage to the officer’s vehicle but disabling damage to the other car. The off-ramp was fully shut down while the crash was investigated and cleared, and there were no injuries. The driver who hit the officer’s vehicle was evaluated and is facing charges for driving under the influence and other traffic charges.
Later on Thursday, at around 5:15 a.m., an El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO) Sergeant was conducting a traffic stop on southbound I-25 just south of Garden of the Gods Road when a driver hit the Sergeant’s stopped vehicle. The Sergeant was inside their vehicle at the time but was uninjured. The driver was also uninjured and both vehicles could be driven from the scene.
The driver was cited for traffic-related offenses and CSPD will complete the traffic crash report.
In 2023, Governor Jared Polis signed a law requiring drivers to slow down or move over when approaching a stationary vehicle on the side of the road.
