Two teens arrested on suspicion of gang activity

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A 14-year-old and a 15-year-old were arrested on Tuesday, July 2, after several months-long investigations led to the two being identified as suspects in various crimes, including bringing a gun on school grounds.

According to CSPD, the investigations began in early 2024, when the Strategic Investigations Unit (SIU) began looking into members of a local gang for numerous violent and firearms related crimes. Through the investigation, detectives obtained search warrants for two separate homes, one on the southeast side of Colorado Springs and the other near Prospect Lake.

On July 2, the first search warrant was carried out by the Tactical Enforcement Unit (TEU) in the 2100 block of Delta Drive, near South Academy Boulevard and El Morro Road. That search resulted in the arrest of a 15-year-old boy for Unlawful Possession of a Weapon on School Grounds.

The SIU and TEU then moved to conduct the search at the second house in the 1000 block of East Rio Grande Street, west of Prospect Lake. Prior to serving the search warrant, a 14-year-old suspect was seen walking away from the home, and when officers tried to make contact, the suspect pulled a handgun and ran.

During a short chase, the suspect threw the handgun into a yard and was caught a short distance away. The handgun was found to have been stolen during a burglary in 2023.

The 15-year-old was booked into the Zebulon Pike Juvenile Detention Facility on his warrant, and is facing new charges related to multiple other investigations, including Motor Vehicle Theft, Menacing, Protection Order Violation, and Possession of a Handgun. The 14-year-old was also booked in to the Juvenile Detention Facility on charges of Motor Vehicle Theft, Menacing, and Possession of a Handgun.

Neither teen will be identified due to their ages.
