VFW holds blood drive to combat shortage

(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) held a blood drive on Monday, March 3 in an effort to combat a national blood shortage.

The event took place at VFW Post 6461 in Fountain. The Red Cross is currently experiencing the lowest number of donors in the last 20 years, with blood and platelet donations desperately needed to help alleviate the shortage and ensure life-saving medical procedures can go on without delay.

The VFW said the blood drive on Monday was a resounding success, and the response from the community to come out and donate to save lives has been inspiring.

“We’re almost full. They can only take 42 to 44 liters of blood per donation because of their storage capacity. And we’re almost at that capacity,” said Travis Baker, VFW District Commander. “So it’s amazing, you know, to be able to bring all of us together to do this, is just amazing.”

This drive was one of the VFW’s quarterly events, with the next drive happening in June. You can follow Post 6461 on Facebook to stay up to date with all its current events.
