(COLORADO SPRINGS) — As a part of the “Still Serving Campaign,” the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is honoring a special dog and his partner for promoting the role of service dogs as life-changing tools for veterans facing post-deployment challenges.
Retired Marine Corps Chief Warrant Officer 3 Thomas J. Heaton is a decorated counterintelligence specialist who returned from seven combat and two operational deployments during his military career. After years of high-pressure service, he struggled with hidden emotional struggles, such as hyper-vigilance and disconnection from civilian life.
Heaton sought support through the Warriors Choice Foundation after witnessing a fellow Marine’s experience with a service dog, and in 2024, he was matched with Colt, the service dog who changed his life.

Colt provides grounding, help with balance, and emotional comfort to Heaton, allowing him to navigate everyday life with clarity and an unshakeable bond. Colt is always within 10 feet of Heaton and always senses when he needs help.
Together, Heaton and Colt serve at the National Space Defense Center and exemplify the special bond between veterans and service dogs and how they change lives after deployment. Heaton’s message is “It’s ok to ask for help.”
The VFW Still Serving campaign highlights the continued service of veterans and their commitment to country and community.
