(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) said the driver of a Toyota who was killed in a crash on Saturday, June 21, was identified by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office as 61-year-old Charles Carlton.
According to CSPD, on Saturday at around 9 p.m., officers were called to a serious crash at the intersection of Constitution Avenue and Alpine Drive. When police arrived, they found a two-car crash involving a Ram pickup and a Toyota Rav4. The driver of the Rav4, later identified as Carlton, was taken to the hospital.
CSPD’s investigation revealed the pickup was traveling west on Constitution Avenue, and at the same time, the Rav4 was heading east on Constitution. The Rav4 started making a left-hand turn to travel north on Alpine Drive when it was hit by the Ram truck.
Immediately after the crash, a single-vehicle crash happened when a Dodge Charger traveling behind the Ram swerved in an attempt to avoid the crash.
Carlton later died at the hospital due to his injuries. CSPD said the investigation remains ongoing, but speed and impairment are being considered factors in the crash. This is the 20th traffic fatality in Colorado Springs in 2025. At this time last year, there were 30 traffic fatalities.
