WATCH: CMZoo’s oldest gorilla, Roxie, turns 48

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s (CMZoo) oldest gorilla, Roxie turned 48 on Saturday, Aug. 31, and all of the gorillas in her troop helped her celebrate by sharing snacks and fun enrichment.

In the video above, Roxie is enjoying her special birthday activities with Kwisha, Ahsa, and Silverback Goma.

Born in 1976, Roxie is one of the oldest gorillas in human care. The median life expectancy for female western lowland gorillas is 39 years, according to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

With the support of her care team, Roxie has overcome several health issues. Due to arthritis and other age-related conditions, she has been in long-term hospice care since 2019.
