DENVER (KDVR) — Police are investigating a deadly three-vehicle crash that happened on U.S. Highway 36 in the early morning of New Year’s Day, the Westminster Police Department said.
Around 1:30 a.m. police responded to the crash that occurred in the westbound lanes of US 36 near Church Ranch Boulevard. The westbound lanes of the highway were shut down overnight as officers investigated the area.
WPD said that initial findings suggest that road rage between two drivers started an altercation. The drivers pulled over on westbound US 36 where one driver left his vehicle to confront the other person.
While outside his vehicle, the driver was hit by an SUV traveling westbound on the highway. The man was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Investigators also believe alcohol may have been involved as they found an open container in the vehicle of the man who was hit.
Police said there have been no other reported injuries and no charges have been filed pending the investigation.
