What Highland Lake Fire evacuees need to know

(TELLER COUNTY, Colo.) — The Teller County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) said on Tuesday, Oct. 29 the Sheriff’s Office will have escorts available to those who need to pick up critical medications.

TCSO said if an evacuee needs to pick up medications they can contact TCSO at (719) 687-9652 to schedule an escort. TCSO is asking those in need to have a photo ID and proof of residence ready.

Those in the following areas are under pre-evacuation orders:

Aspen Moor and Spring Valley subdivisions

County Road 51 on both sides from County Road 5 to County Road 512

County Road 5 South of County Road 51 on the west side only to include Grandview Subdivision

County Rd 5 north of County Rd 51 on both sides up to Forest Service Road 357

FEMA has a guide for what to include in an emergency supplies kit on their website.

The American Red Cross of Colorado and Wyoming Region said an evacuation center has been opened at the Woodland Park Community Church located at 800 Valley View Drive. Volunteers are on the scene and shelters are open to all.

Sheriff Mikesell asked anyone with animals still inside the evacuation zone to let the Sheriff’s Office know their location so rescue teams could work to get them out. Teller County Regional Animal Shelter (TCRAS) is accepting small animals and the Teller County Fairgrounds located at 500 West Carr Avenue in Cripple Creek is accepting large animals.
