Winter Storm Warning active for portions of SoCo

(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — Another day, another winter weather system here in Southern Colorado! This time around it looks like snow totals could be a bit more impressive with a longer duration system on the way.

Winter Weather Alerts active as of Wednesday afternoon

As of Wednesday afternoon, a winter storm warning is active for portions of the Sangre de Cristo and Wet mountains. Pikes Peak is also under a winter storm warning with the surrounding lower elevations under a winter weather advisory. That includes Woodland Park and much of the Palmer Divide.

Portions of the San Juans are also under a winter weather advisory. A winter storm watch is active for some of the Central mountains west of Denver.

Satelitte image of our next storm system

Our next storm system is currently spinning over Southern California and will be knocking on our door step by Thursday morning.

A slight chance for some rain/snow mix will move in over the Pikes Peak region as early as midnight tonight (Wednesday). Activity will continue to increase after that with unsettled weather taking over.

Thursday morning may see a few flurries across the area before a rain snow mix picks up around late afternoon. Snow will be highly dependent upon elevation and freezing levels. A few spots may even see some thunderstorms! Enough energy is in place to support some convective snow, which could lead to locally higher amounts.

The transition from rain/snow mix to all snow should take place by Thursday evening. This is when the heaviest snowfall is expected so plan on some high impacts for any sort of traveling.

Snow may very well linger into Friday morning and even Friday afternoon, so plan on a slightly longer duration event this time around.

Commute Planner for next storm system

Here’s a look at what you can generally expect for your commute over the next 36 to 48 hours. The roughest travel time should be late Thursday on into Friday.

Winter weather impacts

Above you can see where the highest impacts are expected across the region. Our mountain peaks should see the most impact this time around with elevation playing a big role yet again.

Pikes Peak Region expected snow totals

A look at the Pikes Peak Region paints a pretty snowy picture for America’s Mountain with lesser amounts at the lower elevations. The Springs area can expect roughly 2-6 inches with higher amounts up near the Palmer Divide and Black Forest. Woodland Park should see a healthy 4-8 inches and Cripple Creek may see up to a foot of snow.

Southern Colorado Snow Totals

Zooming out just a bit, you can get a better idea of the big picture. It looks like just about everyone will see some snow with the Eastern Plains expecting less, and the mountains expecting more.

Plenty can still change though, even within the next several hours, so be sure to stick with the FOX21 Storm Team for future updates!
