(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — A woman has died in custody at the El Paso County Jail, just over two weeks after the last jail death.
According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO), a 33-year-old woman was found unresponsive in her cell just after 5:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 8. EPSO deputies and medical staff responded, and additional personnel from American Medical Response (AMR) and the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) assumed life-saving efforts shortly before 6 a.m., however, the woman was declared dead.
“Our Office extends our condolences to the individual’s family and friends during this difficult time,” EPSO said.
EPSO said Sheriff Joseph Roybal has ordered an investigation into the incident, though EPSO said “at this stage of the investigation, there is no indication of foul play or self-harm.”
This death comes 15 days after another death at the jail, that of 47-year-old Paula Orth, who was found in her cell on the evening of July 24.
