Work begins on Nevada Avenue underground electric lines

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Colorado Springs Utilities (Springs Utilities) has begun work to move a mile-long portion of electric lines underground.

Springs Utilities said the work has been made a priority since a damaging December 2021 windstorm. Moving the lines underground will ensure reliability of service for a vital corridor that serves thousands of customers and major hospitals.

Springs Utilities said work began in early March and is slated to conclude in July 2024. The project will be completed in three continuous phases.

“The Nevada corridor, particularly the stretch between E. Harrison Street and E. Commerce Street, represents a critical part of Springs Utilities’ electric grid,” said Springs Utilities. “It is currently served by multiple overhead electric lines and poles. During the December 2021 windstorms, this corridor experienced several pole failures, underscoring the need for proactive measures to safeguard electric infrastructure against future incidents.”

As part of the construction process, crews will install electric equipment within the roadway itself, resulting in temporary lane closures in the area. Springs Utilities reminds the community to watch for crews if you are traveling in the area.

“As you travel through this construction site, remember that every worker has someone counting on them to come home safely. Let’s keep them in mind and drive with care,” said Springs Utilities.
