Victim identified in fatal hit and run, arrest made

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) has released the identity of the pedestrian injured in a hit-and-run on Sunday, Aug. 4, at the intersection of Hancock Expressway and Jet Wing Drive. The victim died of his injuries on Tuesday, Aug. 6.

The El Paso County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy and identified the victim as 31-year-old Nicholas Bates. The photo below was provided by his family.

According to CSPD, officers responded to a crash involving a car and a pedestrian around 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 4, and when they arrived they found Bates, but the car had left the scene. Bates was brought to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The investigation revealed that Bates was crossing Hancock southbound when he was hit by a westbound vehicle.

CSPD reported that on Friday, Aug. 9, an arrest warrant was issued for 31-year-old Landis Bryant Jamal Hester min connection to the crash. Hester was taken into custody on Monday, Aug. 19, and charged with an Accident Involving Death – Hit and Run, Motor Vehicle Theft, and other traffic-related charges.

This is the 35th traffic fatality in Colorado Springs in 2024. At this time in 2023, there were 27 traffic fatalities.
