(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) tore down a wall of an abandoned building during a trespassing investigation to save a little calico kitten that had somehow become trapped in the wall for days without food or water.
CSPD said the Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) was in the area of North Academy Boulevard and Austin Bluffs Parkway on Tuesday, Aug. 20 in response to multiple complaints from area businesses of trespassing, camping, and narcotics activity.
Four people were cited for trespassing, and two were cited for illegal camping. CSPD said six people were ultimately taken to the Criminal Justice Center on misdemeanor and felony warrants.
While officers were searching an abandoned building for trespassers, CSPD said they heard what sounded like a cat in distress coming from the attic. After several minutes of searching, the officers determined the cat was trapped inside a wall and had potentially been there for several days without food or water.
The HOT officers tore down a section of the wall and ceiling, and found a “severely malnourished kitten.” CSPD notified the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR), and the kitten was taken to the shelter for medical treatment.
FOX21 News reached out to HSPPR for an update on the little kitty, and the shelter said she is a bit small for her age at only 15 ounces and about 8 weeks old. She is recovering, though, and HSPPR said she is getting ready to go to a foster home so she can grow enough to be adopted.
“She is curious, talkative, and appears to be healthy,” HSPPR said.
The talkative little calico already has a bright future ahead of her, as HSPPR and CSPD confirmed that one of the responding HOT officers has placed a choice hold on her, in the hope of giving her a forever home once she’s big and strong enough to be adopted.
