(COLORADO SPRINGS) — It’s a project more than 60 years in the making–the City of Colorado Springs is preparing to start construction to extend Powers Boulevard about two miles north to Voyager Parkway.
The expansion will extend Powers from Highway 83 to Voyager Parkway.
“Reducing congestion and travel times, minimizing cut-through traffic through neighborhoods, improving safety, especially at busy intersections, and preparing for growth by protecting our community’s quality of life,” said Gayle Sturdivant, the City Engineer and Deputy Director of Public Works.
The project is set to begin at the end of 2025. It will start with three new bridges to connect Ridgeline Drive, Flying Horse Club Drive, and a pedestrian bridge over Powers.
“Voters approved this project as part of the PPRTA ballot in November 2022,” said Sturdivant.
The City will also conduct a noise study to see whether or not it will need to add sound barriers. Crews expect to have the entire project done by 2030.
“Most of it is really in unpopulated areas, and should be minimal traffic disruption. However, with every construction project, we ask folks to be mindful of the traffic cones, mindful of the workers and traffic advisories, for their safety and for the safety for our workers too,” said Sturdivant.
Colorado Springs will host an informational meeting about this project on July 17, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Discovery Canyon High School.
