ALERT: Salmonella outbreak linked to charcuterie meats, Colorado impacted

(COLORADO) — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has expanded a food safety alert for potentially contaminated charcuterie meats after Salmonella infections doubled across the U.S. and now Colorado is impacted, too.

According to the CDC’s latest update, 47 illnesses from 22 states have been reported, including one case in Colorado. So far 10 people have been hospitalized and illnesses first started being reported on Nov. 20, 2023.

“The true number of sick people in this outbreak is likely much higher than the number reported,” wrote the CDC. “This is because many people recover without medical care and are not tested for Salmonella. In addition, recent illnesses may not yet be reported as it usually takes three to four weeks to determine if a sick person is part of an outbreak.”

The CDC listed the below as food that may be contaminated:

Busseto brand Charcuterie Sampler

Has prosciutto, sweet soppressata, and dry coppa

Sold at Sam’s Club

Comes in a twin-pack (2 x 9oz)

Any lot code

Fratelli Beretta brand Antipasto Gran Beretta

Has black pepper coated dry salami, Italian dry salami, dry coppa, and prosciutto

Sold at Costco

Comes in a twin-pack (2 x 12oz)

Any lot code

“Investigators are working to determine if any additional products may be contaminated,” according to the CDC.

The CDC said if you have these products, here’s what you should do:

Throw them away:

While this investigation is ongoing, do not eat the Busseto brand Charcuterie Sampler from Sam’s Club or Fratelli Beretta brand Antipasto Gran Beretta from Costco. Throw them away.

Wash surfaces and containers:

Wash surfaces and containers that may have touched these products using hot soapy water or a dishwasher.

Call your healthcare provider:

Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of these severe Salmonella symptoms:

Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102°F

Diarrhea for more than 3 days that is not improving

Bloody diarrhea

So much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down

Signs of dehydration, such as:

Not peeing much

Dry mouth and throat

Feeling dizzy when standing up

Symptoms of Salmonella, according to the CDC:

Diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps

Symptoms usually start six hours to six days after swallowing the bacteria

Most people recover without treatment after four to seven days

“Some people—especially children younger than 5 years, adults 65 years and older, and people with weakened immune systems—may experience more severe illnesses that require medical treatment or hospitalization,” warned the CDC.
