(BLACK FOREST, Colo.) — Black Forest Fire and Rescue is reminding community members of the fire hazards posed by candles and how to safely use them.
During the five years between 2018-2022, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 5,910 structure fires started by candles.
Some tips Black Forest Fire is reminding the community are:
Don’t leave candles unattended
Keep candles away from flammable items
Keep matches and lighters out of reach of children
Place candles in sturdy, fire-resistant holders that won’t tip over easily
Use battery-powered lights during a power outage as they are safer than candles
Extinguish candles properly. Don’t use water or another liquid, as it can cause the wax to splatter and break the glass.
Overall, these fires caused an annual average of 74 deaths and 558 injuries, as well as $257 million in property damages.
