Boutique helps special needs teens with the perfect prom

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Grins of anticipation filled the faces of southern Colorado prom-goers as they lined up outside Something New Boutique. Inside waited the perfect outfit to dance their special night away.

“We’re helping Night to Shine attendees, the kings and queens that are going to the ball, find donated dresses and suits to wear to their ball,” said General Manager of Something New Boutique, Sophia Burgo.

Night to Shine, a worldwide prom night for people with special needs, is hosted by the Tim Tebow Foundation and will take place on Feb. 9. According to the Tim Tebow Foundation, the event is for anyone 14 and older who is living with disabilities, and is hosted by local churches around the world.

Along the hangers were a wide variety of dresses which these prom-goers had the chance to select from.

Instead of helping brides-to-be find the dress of their dreams, Something New Boutique warmly welcomed teens and young adults with special needs to find the perfect gown or suit for the highly anticipated occasion.

“This is the first time we’re hosting this event,” Burgo said. “We will definitely be doing it for years to come, we love being able to make these people feel special and beautiful for their day.”

While the racks were filled with dresses of all colors and sizes, the most heartwarming aspect was their source: a testament to the generosity of the southern Colorado community, each one a gift from the heart.

More than 100 prom gowns were donated from southern Colorado community members, leaving many options for these young women to choose from.

“We’ve donated dresses from our store, our staff has donated their time and volunteered their time, and they’re going to be volunteering at the event as well,” said Burgo.

The true heroes within wore no capes; instead, these stylists had bright orange coats and were dedicated to helping each prom attendee find their desired ensemble.

“They’re going to be walking a red carpet when they walk into this event,” Burgo said. “We want them looking and feeling their best and they deserve that and so I think they’re going to have so much more fun when they feel like they’re dressed to the nines.”

Each of the fitting rooms were reserved for a prom attendee who would be helped by a stylist to find the attire of their dreams.

While the final decision came down to the prom attendee, a supportive crowd of loved ones and family members, including Shelly McCrary, stood by to cheer them on. McCrary beamed with joy as her daughter, Tabitha decided on a dazzling red prom gown.

“It was very special to get to see her experience picking out a dress like that and having a stylist work with her and make her feel special and do that,” McCrary said. “For me, getting to experience that is amazing.”

When asked how it felt to find the perfect dress, Tabitha shared she felt “good and happy.”

Captured in photographs, the smiles shared between Shelly and Tabitha spoke volumes to the immense impact of Something New boutiques kindness.

While these prom queens went through the racks and tried on dresses to find “the one,” on the other side of the boutique was a quieter area reserved for the young kings. Fourteen-year-old Rillen Morris selected an all-black suit, one which he could dance the night away in.

“This is very special, it’s very exciting,” said Michelle Morris, Rillen’s mom. “Sometimes our kids don’t lead typical lives, but being able to involve them in typical activities to make those similar high school memories is super exciting.”

This year marks Rillen’s debut at the Night to Shine ball, as he has finally reached the age for attendance.

“We have been talking it up,” said Michelle Morris. “We’ve talked about how he’s going to make his grand entrance and he’s excited to dance to some country, Morgan Wallen is his favorite artist.”

Rillen and his mother were greeted by a stylist in choosing what to wear to the big night.

You can find details on the location and attending this prom on the Tim Tebow Foundation website.

As Rillen beamed with anticipation over his all-black suit, there’s no denying this attire is also accompanied with the memory of the stylist who made it all possible.

“Ella was so helpful and showed you all of this stuff that you could pick from,” Michelle said to Rillen. “Yeah, and Ella made you blush.”

Something New had over 40 appointments scheduled for the try-on event, and Burgo said they already had some walk-ins as well. While this is the first time they are hosting the event, it seemed it would not at all be the last.

“We would love to be partnering with Night to Shine in the future,” Burgo said. “We will definitely be doing this in the future years with donations next December, January as well.”

Tabitha smiled alongside one of her friends who also found the perfect dress to wear to the Night to Shine ball.

Now, with the outfit of their dreams in hand, these prom-goers have one less thing to worry about, and instead get to carry the memorable way in which it was made possible.

“I really have to give it to the boutique for doing this and partnering with the foundation, because this is really a neat experience for the young adults, older adults, both female and male,” said McCrary.
