(COLORADO) — With summer well underway, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is reminding drivers of a state law that ensures the safety of bicyclists.
On Thursday, Aug. 7, CDOT posted to Facebook to answer a common question about whether bicyclists can ride in the middle of a lane. According to the post, because of Colorado’s Full Lane Law, there are some exceptions when this is permitted.
According to CDOT, bicyclists are permitted to occupy a full lane when:
The road is too narrow for vehicles and bicycles to travel side by side.
No shoulder or bike lane is present.
Passing another vehicle or a bicycle moving in the same direction.
Making a left turn.
Avoiding hazardous road conditions.
“While bicyclists must ride as far to the right as is safe, sometimes they occupy the full lane,” explained CDOT. “This is not done to inconvenience drivers; it’s done to ensure the safety of bicyclists.”
