(CAÑON CITY, Colo.) — As the first quarter of 2025 wraps up, Cañon City leaders are diving into crime trends, police response times, and how resources are being distributed to ensure community safety. The goal? To take a detailed look at crime data and evaluate how the police department is managing it.
Between Jan. 1 and March 31 of this year, the Cañon City Police Department (CCPD) responded to 5,861 calls for service, generating a total of 839 case numbers. These cases covered everything from criminal offenses to non-criminal incidents and traffic situations.
Here’s a quick breakdown of the current police staffing situation:
Four patrol sergeants
11 patrol units (with each unit assigned either one officer per vehicle or two officers per vehicle in training units)
One K-9 unit (a team consisting of an officer and a K-9 who also works in patrol)
Patrol officers work 12-hour shifts, either from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. or 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. There’s a sergeant on duty to supervise each shift, with three officers assigned to each one.
The department is currently reviewing crime trends to compare how things have changed since the final quarter of 2024. According to the early numbers, crime overall has dropped slightly by 4%, with arrests up by 8%. Total cases have remained about the same, sitting at around 839 incidents for the quarter.
What’s happening with property crimes?
When it comes to property crimes, the picture is a bit mixed. Here’s how the numbers stack up compared to the last quarter of 2024:
Burglary: 22 cases, which is a 38% increase
Criminal mischief/defacing property: 35 cases, a 29% drop
Theft offenses: 93 cases, an 11% decrease
Motor vehicle theft: 13 cases, down by 7%
Total property crimes: 174 cases, a 13% decrease overall
What about crimes against people?
Personal crimes—those involving the threat or use of force against another person—are also under review. Here’s a quick snapshot of the changes:
Sexual assault: 14 cases, down 18%
Aggravated assault: 19 cases, a 37% decrease
Intimidation: 63 cases, an increase of 19%
Total person crimes: 143 cases, a slight 3% drop overall
How are police responding?
The CCPD divides Cañon City into four response zones, with zones 1 through 3 covering the northern side of Highway 50 and the east side of town. When it comes to response times, things are looking pretty efficient. A whopping 82% of calls are answered, and officers are on their way within 0 to 3 minutes, and about 75% of those calls see officers arrive within that same 3-minute window.

The police department will be presenting all of this information to the Cañon City Council at their meeting on Wednesday, April 9, at 6 p.m.
