Carie Hallford pleads guilty to wire fraud conspiracy in federal Return to Nature Funeral Home case

(DENVER) — Carie Hallford, co-owner of the Return to Nature Funeral Home, which was found to have over 190 bodies improperly stashed within as family members believed their loved ones to be properly buried, pled guilty to Conspiracy to Commit Wire Fraud on Monday, Aug. 4, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado, but is requesting that all other counts be dismissed, according to court documents.

As part of the guilty plea, Hallford admits to agreeing with at least one person to knowingly commit wire fraud, that she knew the objective of the conspiracy, that she voluntarily involved herself, that she intended to act for shared mutual benefit, and that she intended to defraud. A record of credit card payments was listed as evidence of interstate wire communications to carry out the scheme.

Documents state that Hallford agrees to accept the applicable sentence of imprisonment handed down by the court for the count of wire fraud, as well as any restitution determined by the court, to be split with co-defendant Jon Hallford.

The plea deal is dependent on the government’s agreement to dismiss all other counts that were in the pending Indictment at the time of sentencing, and for the government not to request a sentence of more than 15 years of imprisonment. The maximum sentence for the count of wire fraud is 20 years.

According to court documents, the minimum amount of total restitution owed by Hallford is $1,070,413, and the total amount owed will be determined at sentencing. Court documents indicated that Hallford agreed to fully cooperate in the investigation of the amount of loss and the identification of victims who should receive restitution.

According to the courtroom minutes, the guilty plea to the count of Conspiracy to Commit Wire Fraud was accepted, and approval of the remaining agreements was deferred pending an investigation and review. Sentencing is set for Dec. 3, 2025.
