(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) has determined the cause of a house fire in Stratton Meadows on Friday, March 8, that left one person dead.
CSFD said the fire in the 1100 block of Norwood Avenue was determined to be accidental, caused by the improper disposal of smoking materials near a medical oxygen tank.
Fire crews originally responded just before 11:45 a.m. on March 8, and when they arrived on scene, CSFD said they could see heavy smoke and fire coming from the front of the home. While fighting the fire, CSFD said crews found a person in the front room of the home.
Crews removed the person from the home and determined that the person was dead on scene. The Colorado Springs Police Department is investigating the death. The El Paso County Coroner’s Office will determine the official cause of death.
CSFD reminds the community that it is safer to smoke outdoors, and urges proper disposal of smoking materials. You should never smoke around a medical oxygen tank, CSFD said.
