Crews originally responded to the complex just before 7 a.m. on March 9 after callers to 911 reported that a hallway in the building was full of smoke. When crews arrived, they found “heavy smoke” coming from the first floor. As they were working to get the fire under control, firefighters found a child in the apartment where the fire was coming from.

CSFD said firefighters quickly removed the child from the apartment and provided medical attention. The child was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, where they later died. Because the fire resulted in a fatality, CSFD said the Colorado Springs Police Department would be investigating the death. The official cause of death will be determined by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office.

A cat was also found dead inside the apartment.

CSFD said smoke alarms inside the apartment were working properly, and they did alert on the morning of the fire.

“It is always important to practice safety precautions in the kitchen,” said CSFD. “CSFD recommends never using the stove if you are drowsy or intoxicated, always staying in the kitchen when using appliances, and keeping anything that can catch fire away from hot surfaces.”
