DENVER (KDVR) — Criminal charges are pending after a bullet was fired near Ranch View Middle School on Wednesday and hit an exterior school door.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said that deputies were dispatched to the school at about 11:15 a.m. for a suspicious circumstance.
Deputies were told that a staff member and a student heard a loud pop and saw a puff of smoke coming from the bedroom window of a house adjacent to the school.
The school resource officers put the school on a secure perimeter as patrol deputies responded to the scene for the investigation. While deputies were investigating, an occupant of the residence where the smoke was seen approached the law enforcement at the school and self-reported the incident.
The sheriff’s office said that the resident told deputies he had believed a weapon he was cleaning was not loaded while handling it, but he had not removed the round from the chamber. While cleaning the firearm, he accidentally discharged a round.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said that the round traveled through a window “in the direction of the school,” and did hit the exterior door of the school building.
There were no injuries reported. The middle school is located adjacent to the Thunder Ridge High School.
The resident is reportedly cooperating with law enforcement and criminal charges are pending, the sheriff’s office reported.
