Chase on I-25 near Walsenburg ends in head-on crash

(WALSENBURG, Colo.) — Seven people were sent to the hospital on Monday, June 2 after a chase on I-25 resulted in the suspect’s car crashing head-on with an oncoming car.

According to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP), a trooper tried to pull over a 2008 Nissan Altima on Monday evening for speeding on northbound I-25, but the driver refused to pull over. The trooper did not engage in a chase.

Following that incident, the Walsenburg Police Department encountered the same Nissan and engaged in a pursuit shortly before 5:45 p.m. During the chase, CSP said the driver of the Nissan crossed over the interstate’s center median just south of Walsenburg and crashed head-on into a southbound 2018 Dodge Durango.

One Walsenburg police officer was taken to the hospital with minor injures. The two people inside the Nissan Altima were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, and four people inside the Dodge Durango were taken to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries.

The crash is currently under investigation by the CSP Vehicular Crimes Unit.
