CSP: Armed shoplifting suspect hit, killed by PPD vehicle

(PUEBLO, Colo.) — An allegedly armed shoplifting suspect was killed on Tuesday, June 3 after being hit by a car driven by a Pueblo Police officer during an incident on the north side of Pueblo.

According to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP), the Pueblo Police Department (PPD) attempted to contact an alleged shoplifter at the Famous Footwear on North Elizabeth Street shortly before 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The suspect ran from officers when they approached, and PPD chased the suspect both on foot and in patrol vehicles.

During the chase, CSP said the suspect ran toward the front entrance of the Colorado State Patrol Pueblo office and pulled a gun. Officers gave the suspect commands to drop the gun, and when those commands were ignored, CSP said the suspect was hit by a PPD vehicle driven by an officer.

Medical aid was provided to the suspect, but they were pronounced dead at the scene. The Pueblo County Coroner will identify the suspect.

The 10th Judicial District Critical Response Team (CIRT) has been activated, and CSP will be leading the ongoing investigation into this incident.
