DENVER (KDVR) – Crime at Denver International Airport has prompted the city to ask for extra money for security efforts.
The parking lots at the airport have been a hot spot for crime, mainly for auto thefts.
The city is asking for more than $2.8 million for the one-time purchase of Data Storage Centers equipment for the security cameras.
The drafters of the resolution say the goal is to prevent and deter auto thefts and help out investigators if they do happen. Right now, there are already blue lights, cameras, signage and staff patrols.
These measures are for the East, West and Pikes Peak parking lots at DIA.
According to the Denver Police Department crime map, there have been 17 reported auto thefts in the last month and 23 reports of theft from cars at DIA.
In the last 6 months, there have been 137 cars reported stolen and 110 reports of things being stolen from cars. This is just from parking lots around DIA and does not count the rental car lots.
This resolution is on the agenda Monday night, the meeting starts at 3:30 p.m.
