City to host open house for ‘Segment 2’ of the South Academy Boulevard Project

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The City of Colorado Springs is holding an open house on Tuesday, Sept. 9, to let the community know more about the next segment of the South Academy Boulevard Reconstruction Project.

The open house will be held at the Pikes Peak United Way’s Family Success Center at 1520 Verde Drive on Sept. 9, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

With Segment One (North), stretching from Bijou St. to Airport Road, completed in late 2024, the City looks to begin Segment Two (South) later in the fall, following the Sept. 9 open house.

Segment Two’s construction will take place from East Fountain Boulevard to Jet Wing Drive. “The south phase will happen in four segments to minimize disruptions to travelers and local businesses,” wrote the City.

The reconstruction will address crucial items like aging pavement and improving the curbs and gutters along the project’s length. Drainage is also a key factor for the rebuild, with major improvements to manholes, drainage pipes, and inlets also outlined on the project’s website.

“This project is believed to be the first major renovation for South Academy Boulevard since it opened in 1969,” the City wrote. “The roadway serves as a key transportation corridor for southeast Colorado Springs and the region.”

In total, the project corridor will run 18 miles down S. Academy Blvd. between Bijou Street and Airport Road. Funding for the project comes from the Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority.
