CSPD: Sexually Violent Predator on supervised release

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) notified the community of the supervised release of a sex offender who is now living on North Nevada Avenue near Austin Bluffs Parkway.

According to CSPD, Larry Kaualeni Abenes is a sex offender whose past behavior has caused him to be labeled as a “Sexually Violent Predator” (SVP) by the Colorado Courts. CSPD is making a community notification as required by law.

CSPD reported that in 2006, Abenes was convicted in El Paso County of Sexual Assault on a Child by One in a Position of Trust – Victim Under 15 and Aggravated Incest. Before that, in 1985, he was convicted in Kohala County, Hawaii, of Second-Degree Sodomy and Second-Degree Sexual Abuse.

Abenes is registered as living at the Community Correction facility called “Embrave” at 3950 North Nevada Avenue. He is described as being a 61-year-old Asian/Pacific Islander man who is 5’7″ tall and 176 lbs. with black hair and brown eyes.

CSPD has undertaken the following tasks, among others:

Notified the Colorado Department of Public Safety’s Sex Offender Management Board (SOMB) Notification Team.

Reviewed and confirmed Abenes’s residence, employment, access to vehicles,
legal status, and past crimes.

Made notifications to neighbors and businesses deemed to be in the immediate area.

Briefed patrol personnel on Abenes’s status, history, appearance, residence,
employment, and vehicles.

Notified surrounding law enforcement agencies.

Provided an online video that describes the SVP community notification process,
SVP information and additional resources for the community.

CPSD stated that the department will make all reasonable efforts to ensure that Abenes registers as a sex offender and understands his responsibilities as such.

Abenes is one of 21 SVPs currently registered with CSPD who live in the community. CSPD stated that the department takes his presence very seriously and is intent on ensuring he conducts himself lawfully and that the community remains safe and aware.
