City warns of traffic impacts north of airport

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is planning to close one direction of South Powers Boulevard at a time overnight for four nights north of the Colorado Springs Airport (COS) which the City of Colorado Springs said could cause traffic impacts.

The City said the closure will start on Thursday, Feb. 20, and end on Sunday, Feb. 23. The closures are for safety while bridge girders are placed over S. Powers Blvd. One direction of Powers Boulevard will be closed at a time and the current schedule is:

Thursday, Feb. 20: Southbound Powers Boulevard closed at East Platte Avenue from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Friday, Feb. 21: Northbound Powers Boulevard closed at Airport Road from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Saturday, Feb 22: Southbound Powers Boulevard closed at E. Platte Ave. from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Sunday, Feb. 23: Northbound Powers Boulevard closed at Airport Rd. from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The schedule is weather-dependent and could change. There will be message boards near the construction to provide the latest schedule information. The City said drivers should expect lane closures as early as 7 p.m. and all closures will be removed in time for the morning commute.

Detours will be in place and uniformed traffic control officers and flaggers will help direct traffic overnight. Southbound Powers Blvd. will detour onto E. Platte Ave. heading west then turning south on South Academy Boulevard and heading east on Airport Rd. to return onto S. Powers Blvd. COS is recommending that those heading to the airport continue down S. Academy Blvd. and onto Fountain Boulevard.
