Colorado activists rally for transgender rights

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Communities across the nation are concerned with some of the new actions the Trump administration has made, including the LGBTQ+ community, who say they are fearful for the future. A coalition of Colorado Springs activists held a rally to march for transgender rights.

“It’s scary to me, because I know how many are going to end up killing themselves because they don’t think they’re safe anymore,” said Cheyenne D’Muir, an attendee of Saturday’s event.

Members of the LGBTQ+ community say they are living in fear of the Trump administration.

“We are gathering here today to raise objection to President Trump’s executive orders that target and attack trans individuals for being who they are, for their identities as LGBTQ plus people,” said Joeseph an event organizer.

The community says they are worried about anti-LGBTQ+ statements and executive orders from the new administration.

“The biggest thing right now is, especially, on his executive order that he issued that they will only recognize male and female,” added Joseph.

Many LGBTQ+ individuals are now anxious for what’s next.

“This community is definitely feeling fear, a lot of people are scared, nervous, not exactly sure what to expect,” said Tiara Kelley, another event organizer.

The event took place at Acacia Park to serve as a statement of solidarity, demanding protections for transgender people.

“We’re gathering together to say that we’re here, we’re supporting our trans siblings, making sure that their voice is getting heard, that they are welcome in our community, and that they’re not going through this fight alone, that they are they have people standing beside them who are wanting to make a change,” said Joseph.

During a time of uncertainty, members of the LGBTQ+ communities have one message…

“The youth are our future. They have the right to be exactly who they are, and we have to respect them,” added Kelley.

Organizers say if anyone is struggling to call 9-8-8 for immediate help.
