Colorado ranks one of the highest states for car theft

(COLORADO SPRINGS)— Colorado is one of the highest states for car theft in the nation, and according to Insurance Information Institue.org, Pueblo was ranked number one for car thefts for four years in a row.

These sobering statistics are part of the reason the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) recommends several prevention methods to keep you from becoming a victim:

Do not leave valuables in view

Never leave your keys in your car

Double check that your car is locked

Park in well-lit place

Never puff your car on cold mornings

Invest in a steering wheel lock

“Certainly there are other [theft prevention] devices on the market that people can invest in,” said Crime Prevention Officer Brian Corrado. “This is the one [steering wheel locks] that’s easiest to obtain and probably the cheapest or one of the cheapest.”

CSPD provides steering wheel locks to car theft victims through Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority or CATPA— but they recommend everyone has one. CATPA also offers a grant program where victims can apply if their car has suffered damage due to a break in.

CSPD has provided 59 steering wheel locks to victims this year, and 39 of those have been to KIA or Hyundai owners–which are statistically the top two most stolen car brands.

CSPD also warns that if you are going to leave your car to get serviced, make sure that it is at a reputable dealership or garage to keep someone from making a copy of your key.
