(COLORADO SPRINGS/NEW YORK CITY) — Representing Colorado Springs, a dog named Maverick was chosen to compete at the 149th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York City.
“Maverick was invited, and he’s top five in the United States,” said Mark Barton, General Manager and Partner of Phil Long Ford in Motor City. “He’s just a dealership dog and he went to try out and he kept on winning… and he’s the youngest one competing.”
As a sponsor of the popular Pet Pix segment on FOX21 Morning News, Barton joined Chief Meteorologist Matt Meister on Thursday, Feb. 6, to talk about the exciting news.
Barton, who was also joined by Maverick and his other dog Goose in the FOX21 studio, said both dogs are Leonbergers. “It’s a German breed—Newfoundland, St. Bernard, and Great Pyrenees mix,” he described.
The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show kicks off on Saturday, Feb. 8, and runs through Tuesday, Feb. 11. “So there are 14 Best of Breed Leonbergers that are going to be in the show,” Barton said. “Maverick will get on the plane, we’ll get a couple of days rest, go to Central Park, and run around, and we might win a ribbon.”
Barton said Maverick will be competing on Tuesday morning around 9 a.m. local time.
Aside from competing, Maverick and his younger brother Goose, can be found interacting with customers at Phil Long Ford in Motor City as well as the larger community.
“They work hospitals on Sundays; they were just at SCHEELS – Sporting Goods last week, and in New York City, they will be working two events: the fire department and Childen’s Hospital on Sunday,” said Barton.
