Community reacts after two found dead in UCCS dorm room

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs community is concerned and grieving after two people were found dead in a dorm room at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) on the morning of Friday, Feb. 16.

University of Colorado Regent Ken Montera said Friday morning, “I want to express my deep concern and heartfelt prayers and thoughts for those who are affected by the shooting today on the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, campus.”

The investigation is still active, and Montera expressed grief that the incident occurred despite a commitment to safety and security on campus.

“I wanted to share and express my concern for those families and know that we will do everything possible to support the investigation and the police to determine the cause of this horrific tragedy. Again, my heartfelt condolences. Prayers and thoughts are with the families and friends of the individuals that were affected today,” Montera said.

“Very difficult day here at UCCS,” said Chris Valentine, Assistant Vice Chancellor of Marketing and Communications for UCCS. “The safety of our students is our number one priority.”

Valentine said that all classes and services on campus are canceled for Friday. He said that food and counseling resources will be available for students from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the UCCS Cybersecurity Center.

FOX21’s crew spoke with a student, Luke Ming. “I trusted the police to do their job and that things would be alright. It is very sad and there is a lot of grief,” he said. “A sense of community is really important, especially on a small campus and at this time in our lives.”

Governor Jared Polis is aware of the situation and offering his support.

“I am closely monitoring the situation at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs campus and have spoken with our Department of Public Safety, and CU President Todd Saliman to offer state support where needed,” he said.

Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade also made a statement about the incident, expressing solidarity and sympathy.

“We stand with the University of Colorado Colorado Springs students, staff, and faculty impacted by this morning’s incident on the UCCS campus that resulted in the tragic loss of two lives. The university is a family, and it is also part of our Colorado Springs family,” he said.

“Together we mourn, and together we pray for peace and comfort in this dark time for the family and friends of the deceased.”
