(PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo.) — Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) has issued an alert regarding a hazard on the Arkansas River.

On Sunday, Aug. 10, around 10:45 a.m., CPW cautioned boaters and those at the river that a large, fallen tree was presenting a significant blockage on the Arkansas River, roughly three miles above Swallows.
According to CPW, “A large tree has fallen across nearly the entire river channel, creating a strainer that poses a serious risk to boaters, kayakers, and tubers. The strainer blocks most of the main channel and impedes safe passage for watercraft.”

CPW warned that a strainer is particularly dangerous as it allows water to flow through it, but will trap solid objects, like boats, kayaks, and people, against it, creating a risk of injury and drowning.
CPW urges anyone on or planning to use the river:
Avoid this area until the hazard is removed.
Use extreme caution when boating in the vicinity.
Scout the river ahead of time and be prepared to exit the water before reaching the obstruction.
Always wear a properly fitted life jacket and carry appropriate safety gear.
