(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Fourth of July is right around the corner, and firefighters are warning that everyone should be extra aware of fire danger.
While Independence Day is a time for celebration, it is also one of the most dangerous times of the year for fires. Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) Deputy Fire Marshal Kevin Bird spoke more about fire danger, safety, and where to spend the holiday if you’re looking for a fireworks show.
“We have the additional risk that we wouldn’t normally have on any other day of the year, that’s presented by fireworks that the community likes to engage in,” Bird said.
While the current weather may seem like it is not ‘fire weather,’ Bird says that although everything is green, there are still certain potentials that could cause a fire, such as vegetation.
According to Bird, it is illegal to buy, sell, possess, and discharge fireworks. Items that require a flame to ignite, as well as smoke bombs and sparklers, are also illegal in the City. Some items like ‘poppers,’ snappers–things that individuals throw on the ground, then pop–or novelty items are legal, and people can buy or use them.
“If anybody does come across fireworks or has fireworks that they are not intending to use, we encourage them to drop them off at any fire station,” said Bird. “We will have our fire investigators that will come by, pick them up, and dispose of them with the regional bomb unit.”
Bird added he encourages the community to visit any of the events around Colorado Springs that are planned on Friday, July 4.
This year, there are nine different locations around Olympic City to watch fireworks. Those who are looking to get away and maybe spend the holiday somewhere else can also catch a fireworks show in different cities in Southern Colorado.
