The most popular 4th of July foods

(NATIONAL) — Fourth of July is a time for fireworks, fun, and food. Cookouts featuring hamburgers and hot dogs traditionally come to mind, but what are the most popular foods for the holiday?

In 2023, Instacart released a report of the food items that were bought more often than average during the week leading up to July 4, with yellow corn, potato salad, and baby back ribs topping the list. Other popular items included watermelon, hot dog buns, canned baked beans, bratwurst, and beef patties.

In the “hot dog vs. hamburger” war, the majority of the states sided with hot dogs, with 32 states, including Colorado, preferring a good frankfurter over a burger. Hamburger holdouts included the Northwest of the U.S., the Northeast, and the Southeast.

In a more recent study, Target found that while hot dogs still took top spot in 75% of the country, Colorado, Kansas, and New Mexico were equally split between hot dogs and hamburgers.

In terms of drinks, Instacart found that light lagers were the most popular alcohol, with hard seltzers following at number two. Vodka, canned cocktails, and Mexican-style lagers were also popular.

Colorado and New Mexico joined South Carolina in choosing mustard-based barbecue sauces as the condiment of choice for their cookouts. Hot sauce was popular on the West Coast, ranch dressing dominated the central states, and barbecue was popular in the South.

Whatever your favorite food, it’s best spent with family, friends, or neighbors as you enjoy the fireworks and celebrate the country’s birthday.
