CSFD responds to 60+ calls for burst pipes in 24 hours

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Following the recent dangerous cold snap that saw temperatures dip below zero, the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) said it responded to a large amount of calls for burst pipes.

CSFD said it received more than 340 calls for service in a 24-hour time period on Tuesday, Jan. 16, and responded to more than 60 calls regarding burst pipes and broken fire sprinklers in the same amount of time. Even CSFD itself fell victim to a busted sprinkler at its headquarters on Tuesday.

According to CSFD, on an average day, its agency sees about 1-2 water flow alarms or broken pipes, and it usually responds to around 214 calls, which pales in comparison to the high volume of calls received following the cold snap.

Surge in pipe bursts throughout Colorado Springs as weather warms up

CSFD and local plumbers warn that just because temperatures are warming up, does not mean you’re in the clear. James Terrell, the Owner of Tiger Plumbing, explained to FOX21’s Rhea Jha that when pipes freeze, they swell, leading to potential splits. As the ice thaws, water flows through these cracks, posing a risk of flooding homes if not addressed promptly.

CSFD asked the community to continue to monitor their pipes as things start to thaw out. Know where your emergency water shut-off is, and have a plan in place for taking care to avoid unnecessary damage to your property due to flooding.
