CSFD to host quarterly blood drives starting Feb. 26

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) will begin a new life-saving partnership with Vitalant starting Wednesday, Feb. 26.

CSFD will begin to host quarterly blood drives at Fire Station 19 located at 2490 Research Parkway from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m, all blood drives will be held at the same time and location. After hosting its first blood drive in partnership with Vitalant in Oct. 2024, CSFD is turning to the community to step up to donate blood and help save lives in the Pikes Peak Region Area.

The following dates have been set aside for blood drives:

Feb. 16

May 7

Aug. 11

Nov. 4

In October, 53 donors showed up and 56 units of blood were donated which equals 168 lives saved.

Last year, CSFD Medical Lieutenants with the help from UCHealth and the UCHealth Memorial Foundation became the first in the state to carry whole blood (Type O) in their rigs to give life-saving blood transfusions in the field before a patient gets to the hospital.

Since then, Medical Lieutenants have given blood to more than 58 patients with a survival rate of 60%.
