(COLORADO) — According to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP), 16,216 DUI cases were filed in Colorado last year. In response to this, CSP has announced a new designation for anyone caught driving under the influence two or more times.
The new designation is Persistent Drunk Driver (PDD), and CSP says there are four ways for someone to be officially labeled as this:
Multiple DUI convictions
Refusing a DUI chemical test after you’re arrested
Severe intoxicated driving, anyone with a blood alcohol content of 0.15% or higher within two hours of driving.
Anyone caught driving on a suspended license due to a DUI
“It’s hard to imagine that someone would make such an irresponsible choice twice, but it happens daily,” said Co. Matthew C. Packard, Chief of the Colorado State Patrol. “As expected, the penalties increase. We want the seriousness of these drivers’ threat to others to become real for them and those who love them.”
Anyone labeled a PDD will face the following consequences:
An Ignition Interlock Device will be installed in their vehicle for at least two years before their license is fully reinstated. The cost of an Ignition Interlock Device is around $100, and maintenance is estimated between $50 and $100 per month.
Proof of SR-22, high-risk driver insurance coverage for at least two years to demonstrate financial responsibility.
Completion of Level II alcohol abuse treatment and education.
Level II alcohol abuse treatment and education will include 24 hours of classes over 12 weeks, and 42 to 86 hours of therapy, depending on the severity of the case and if the driver refuses a chemical test after arrest.
CSP also wants to remind drivers planning for a night out that the best choices are made before the first drink. Make a plan for a sober ride, especially during what they consider the 100 deadliest days of summer: Memorial Day through Labor Day.
